What is Umbilical Hernia?

An umbilical hernia is a bulge at the belly button (umbilicus) that occurs when part of the intestine pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. It's a fairly common condition, particularly in newborns and infants, affecting up to 20% of babies.

It can result from a weakness in the abdominal wall, increased abdominal pressure, or a failure of the muscles to close properly around the umbilical cord during development.

Congenital Umbilical Hernia

This type of hernia is present at birth or may develop shortly after. It often occurs when the muscles around the navel do not close properly after the baby is born, leaving a small opening.

Many congenital umbilical hernias close on their own by the age of 1 or 2 as the child's abdominal muscles strengthen. Medical intervention is typically considered if the hernia persists beyond this age.

Acquired Umbilical Hernia

This type of hernia can develop in adulthood, often due to factors that weaken the abdominal muscles.Causes include obesity, multiple pregnancies, abdominal surgery, or conditions that increase intra-abdominal pressure.

Acquired umbilical hernias usually do not close on their own and may require surgical intervention to repair the weakened abdominal wall.

Symptoms of Umbilical Hernia

Some individuals may experience tenderness or discomfort around the bulging area. Presence of a noticeable lump or protrusion near the navel.Indicates a serious complication like Swelling, Pain , Redness, Tiredness ,etc.

Your surgeon will provide instructions regarding any medications you should continue or stop before the surgery.

The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia, which means you will be unconscious during the procedure. In some cases, local or regional anesthesia may be used.

The surgeon will make an incision near the umbilicus (navel) to access the hernia. If there is protruding tissue, the surgeon will gently push it back into the abdominal cavity. The hernia is repaired by either stitching the abdominal wall together (herniorrhaphy) or using a mesh to reinforce the weakened area (hernioplasty). The incision is closed with sutures or surgical staples.
